This compound is a synthetic macrocyclic peptidomimetic small molecule inhibitor known as "Inhibitor 2" or "HBH". It is designed to target and inhibit the HIV‑1 protease enzyme—a key aspartic proteinase required for viral maturation and replication in HIV infection. By binding to the active site of HIV‑1 protease, it prevents cleavage of viral polyproteins into functional proteins necessary for assembling infectious virions. The compound has been studied structurally in complex with HIV‑1 protease and is considered an experimental antiviral agent within the class of macrolactams (macrocyclic amides). Its primary mechanism is competitive inhibition at the orthosteric (active) site of the enzyme[6][8]. There are no approved clinical uses; it remains an experimental tool compound.
